Ancient cultures refined the complexity of all matter into four elements - earth, water, air and fire – shaping human activities, cultures and beliefs. In the Blue Mountains these elements surround where people live with the grand scale of canyons and etched peaks, changing atmospherics over endless forests, spectacular cascades and reflective pools, torrents of rain and gentle mists, always anticipating the destruction and renewal created by fire. The Elements features artworks by Ian Brown, Caitlin Hughes, Gary Hayes, Adrian Gilbert, Shane Smithers and Regina Wagner working across a range of genres, including painting, photography, installation and mosaics.

The artists’ subjects, materials and overall mood dovetail, as does the underlying notion of creating art that breathes life into things that are sometimes overlooked. Resurrect evokes a sense of endurance and renewal of what is often dismissed as transitory, quickly passed by, or forgotten.

Jan Melville is a teller of tales, stories that take the form of the printed image and small-scale sculpture. Jan incorporates found materials into her works. These might be objects from nature, or as discovered elsewhere, then resurrected in unexpected ways to give new life, and a new mythology.

Tracy Ponich’s images explore Blue Mountains bushland, and fitting for this exhibition space, aspects of Everglades. These photographs of land and garden join studies of found and fallen minutiae. Isolated flora and fauna, sympathetically captured in studio, come to life through the lens.

Landscape or bush element, Tracy’s photographs possess a stillness and sense of timelessness.

Exhibition: Wednesdays to Sundays, 11am to 3pm. Open public holidays.

Opening, Artist Talk and carving demonstration on Saturday, April 15 from 1pm to 4pm. Join them for drinks and chocolate!

Phoenix Choir is planning a full performance of Handel's Messiah to be held on Sunday April 9 (Palm Sunday). In the tradition of Messiah they are assembling a large choir and will perform with chamber orchestra and professional soloists.

Messiah developed after Handel’s original presentation to encompass many different and much-loved performance traditions. Their Musical Director, Rowen Fox, has researched the modern understanding of the original work. His presentation features a countertenor from Sydney Conservatorium and some original solo and duet arias, while maintaining all the choruses and arias people know and love.

Whilst it may be less usual today to perform the work in the lead-up to Easter, Handel originally composed Messiah for Passiontide. The core of the work in Part Two deals with the events of Lent, Easter and Pentecost, and some of the most poignant moments surrounding the crucifixion and resurrection contrast exquisitely with the joyful Christmas music and triumphant Hallelujah performed in their concert today. A Palm Sunday performance restores the work to its original place in the calendar.

Visit the point of Evans' first crossing by a European, Evans Crown, and parts of Cox's Road 1815. Lunch locally then view O'Connell Plains properties .

Itinerary: subject to variations at the discretion of Lithgow NT.

In late 1813 Assistant Surveyor, George Evans travelled over the Blue Mountains following the steps of Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth but journeyed many miles past the explorers' route, the first European to cross the Great Dividing Range. Visit that site and enjoy morning tea at 'Barkridge' atop the Divide. Then view Evans Crown from which Evans viewed the grazing potential of the land beyond. On Cox's Road, built in 1815 with convict labour, they pass land grants taken up by first settlers.

After lunch at the Tarana Hotel 1873 they reach the fertile O'Connell Plains, named by Evans, where Gov. Macquarie rewarded William Lawson for services to exploration with the property Macquarie in 1822.

A yodellin´, thigh slappin’, lederhosen wettin´ fest of German music from Deta (accordion, vocals) and Rob (guitar, vocals) and featuring the Beatific Beats of their Bavarian Boombox. You´ll thrill to comic classics from the likes of Rammstein and Kraftwerk; you´ll tear off that dirndl and shake a Teutonic Tailfeather when you catch a glimpse of Nena´s 99 Red Balloons; you´ll swoon to Marlene Dietrich´s Lili Marlene but, most of all, you´ll be entertained – and that´s an order!

Deta and Rob always felt that the German Oeuvre was a little under represented in The Beez, so here they are to make amends with an evening of Dancefloor-Compatible Deutsche Derring-do, featuring Deta´s fabulous “Brunhilde Bass“ accordion. One octave below the conventional accordion bass, this is an Alp-quaking tone of Wagnerian proportions. Melded with Rob´s custom Höfner “Blitzkrieg“ guitar, it´s an irresistible rockin´ Polka machine held together by the marching rhythms of a loop machine by the name of Wolfgang Amadeus and, of course, those gorgeous harmonies and cabaret sensibilities which are the icing on the Schwarwälderkirschtorte.

Deta and Rob both hail from Berlin; their band The Beez performs regularly throughout Europe and Australia.

They are extremely pleased to host the launch of Mick Thomas’ new album “These Are The Songs”, a companion album to his new book “These Are the Days” at Hotel Gearin, Katoomba as part of his tour.

Mick’s ever-evolving talents as a writer and performer defines a career as intriguing as it is enduring. His knockabout image partly explains his close relationship with his audience. They see him as one of them. A loyal mob who have followed him from the Weddo’s through his solo career, Mick’s fans relate to his wistful, sentimental and nostalgic lyrics. The characters in Mick’s songs are everyday battlers, as are he and his fans.
